Google Maps Now Lets Users Send Messages to Local Businesses

Google has introduced its business messaging capabilities to Google Maps.

Previously, messaging was available through Google My Business (GMB), allowing users to start text conversations with businesses via their GMB profiles.

Initially, messages were exchanged through SMS. Now, users have the option to send messages directly through the Google Maps app if they prefer that method.

Messages will appear in the side menu of the Google Maps app and can be started by tapping the ‘Message’ button on business profiles.

Google claims this update will help users keep personal messages separate from conversations with businesses.

Additionally, this update expands the GMB messaging feature to more countries, as it was initially available only in select regions.

For businesses, this could potentially lead to an increase in received messages, which is important to consider. Messaging is an optional feature and is turned off by default. Businesses that do not wish to receive messages can simply avoid enabling the feature.

Those interested in enabling messaging can do so through the Google My Business dashboard. Businesses engaging in messaging with customers will have access to stats over time, such as the number of clicks on the message button, conversation counts, and total messages.

If another team member, such as a social media manager, is managing the GMB profile, they must be designated as a manager of the listing to send messages.
